Day 1 Wednesday 14th October 2009
Tripoli
On arrival in Tripoli you are met and transferred to your hotel.
Day 2 Thursday 15th October
Tripoli – Leptis Magna Ruins - Tripoli (B L D)
This morning you are introduced to other members of the group. Your tour begins with a visit to the Supreme Roman ruins of Leptis Magna dating back to 111 BC. After lunch you visit the city of Tripoli and then return to your hotel to freshen up in readiness for the welcome dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 3 Friday 16th October
Tripoli – Benghazi - Susa (B L D)
This morning you are transferred to the airport for your flight to Benghazi (Libya’s second largest city on the eastern end). On arrival you visit the Benghazi Commonwealth War cemetery and the Grave of Lt. Col Geoffrey Keys VC MC. After lunch you drive further east to Susa via Qasr Libya Museum where you view a fine collection of 6th Century AD Byzantine mosaic and the Italian fortress. Dinner will be at your hotel.
Day 4 Saturday 17th October
Susa – Cyrene - Apollonia – Tobruk (B L D)
After breakfast you visit the Greco-Roman ancient sites of Cyrene and Apollonia. After lunch in the Cave restaurant, you drive to Tobruk stopping at the Knightsbridge Cemetery to visit the grave of 2Lt. George Gunn, Royal Horse Artillery. VC MC. Dinner will be at a local restaurant.
Day 5 Sunday 18th October
Tobruk (B L D)
This morning you journey to the “Fig Tree” the Australian First Aid Post, and the remains of the Italian trenches. You then proceed to the Tobruk War Cemetery to lay a wreath, and visit the grave of Cpl. Jack Edmondson, the first Australian to win the Victoria Cross in the Second World War. You finish the day with a visit to the French War Cemetery and German War Memorial. Dinner will be at a local restaurant.
Day 6 Monday 19th October
Tobruk (B L D)
This morning you visit the forward defence lines of the Allies and wander around the battle field. After lunch you visit the Tobruk Military Museum, Tobruk Township and harbour and the remains of the Lady Be Good Aircraft. Dinner will be at a local restaurant.
Day 7 Tuesday 20th October
Tobruk – Marsa Matrouh (B L D)
After an early breakfast you make your way by coach to the Egyptian border, El Sallom, arriving at approximately 10.00am. Your local guide will assist you through customs. You then make your way to Marsa Matrouh, a journey of approximately 220km. Lunch and refreshment stops will be made en route. After booking into your hotel your time is free to relax or take a swim in the Mediterranean Sea and watch the spectacular sunset. Dinner is at a local restaurant.
Day 8 Wednesday 21st October
Marsa Matrouh – Alexandria (B L D)
After breakfast you visit Rommel’s hide cave then travel to Alexandria a journey of approximately 300km. En route you will stop for lunch and visit the Qait Bey Fortress. After checking into your hotel your day is at leisure and this evening dinner will be at a local restaurant.
Day 9 Thursday 22nd October
Alexandria (B L D)
Today is a full day tour in Alexandria, this morning you visit the Catacombs, Pompey’s Pillar and the Roman Amphitheatre. After lunch you visit a Mosque and the spectacular new library. Dinner will be at a local restaurant.
Day 10 Friday 23rd October
Alexandria – El Alamein (B L D)
Departing early you drive to El Alamein and on arrival book into your hotel. After lunch you visit the German and Italian War Memorials. Dinner will be at your hotel
Day 11 Saturday 24th October
El Alamein (B L D)
Your morning is at leisure and this afternoon you attend the International Ceremony at the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery. The service begins at 4.00pm and will be followed by a reception starting at 6.00pm. This year’s service will be hosted by the British Embassy and as such there will not be a separate Commonwealth service.
Day 12 Sunday 25th October
El Alamein B L D
This morning you visit the Abou Mina Monastery, the oldest winery in the world, the pottery oven area, and the Abou Sir Temple. Your afternoon is at leisure and dinner will be at your hotel.
Day 13 Monday 26th October
El Alamein – Cairo (B L D)
Departing early you travel to Cairo and visit the Papaya institute to learn how paper was first made. You then visit the “Funky Shop” where you can purchase clothing made in Egypt. After lunch at a local restaurant, you book into your hotel and the remainder of the day is at leisure. Dinner will be at a local restaurant.
Day 14 Tuesday 27th October
Cairo (B L D)
This morning you visit the pyramids and board a camel, for a ride along the perimeter of the pyramids. There is a charge for anyone wishing to descend into the pyramids. After lunch at a local restaurant, you visit the must see Egyptian Museum. This evening dinner will be at a local restaurant.
Day 15 Wednesday 28th October
Cairo (B D)
Today is a free day to allow you to rest, visit a place of interest, or to complete any shopping you may have. A visit to the Bazaar would be a good way to start the day for those who would like to shop. Tonight you cruise the Nile and enjoy a farewell dinner along with a show that includes belly dancing.
Day 16 Thursday 27th
Cairo (B)
Your tour ends and you are transfered to the airport for your flights home.
