Thailand - ANZAC Day Tour

Day 1 Monday 20th April
Bangkok (D)
Tonight you arrive into Bangkok and overnight at your accommodation.

Day 2 Tuesday 21st April
Bangkok – City Tour (B L)
After breakfast you commence your tour of this Cosmopolitan city and visit the Royal Grand Palace and Wat Prah Kaew. This huge compound occupies an area of about a square mile and houses the Emerald Buddha, the most sacred Buddha image in Thailand. After lunch in a local restaurant you take a cruise along the legendary Chao Phraya River and canals, this is one of the most pleasant ways to explore this city once dubbed the "Venice of the East". This afternoon you visit the Gems Gallery, where you see how gems are cut and set into jewellery. The city comes alive in the evenings and your time is free to explore the street stalls, tailor shops, side cafes and major shopping centres. (Your guide will advise you of clothing restrictions prior to visiting the Royal Palace)

Day 3 Wednesday 22nd April
Bangkok – Nakhon Pathom – Nong Pladuk - Kanchanaburi - River Kwai (B L D)
This morning you depart early for the picturesque River Kwai region, stopping at Nakhon Pathom Temple. This Temple was visible to the PoW’s when they arrived from Singapore. Adjacent to the temple was a massive hospital area where some 10,000 PoW’s were treated after completion of the railway. We then travel to Nong Pladuk station and junction which marks the point from which the Thai – Burma railway commenced and was the site of a huge railway workshop. Then on to Ban Pong station, where the prisoners completed their horrendous journey from Singapore before being forced marched or trucker to various work camps. You book into your hotel in Kanchanaburi and then lunch. After lunch visit the JEATH Museum, and the Thailand – Burma Railway Centre.

Day 4 Thursday 23rd April
Kanchanaburi – River Kwai (B L D)
Today you walk along the “Bridge over the famous bridge crossing the River Kwai then visit the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, where approx. 1,400 Australian’s are buried. You then and board the infamous “Death Railway” train, for a scenic journey across the River Kwai Bridge to Wang Pho Station where you can explore the viaduct. Lunch is provided and after booking into your hotel your time is free to explore the area.

Day 5 Friday 24th April
Hell Fire – Tiger temple (B L D)
After breakfast you travel to Hellfire Pass and walk along the former railway track to Konyu Cutting, Hellfire Pass. As you walk along the cutting you can reflect on the suffering of the POW’s as they built the railway track. Those that feel they would like to walk along the track to the site of “Pack of Cards Bridge” then on to the “Compressor Cutting” can do so. You will be driven to Hintok station and walk back to Hellfire Pass a distance of 4km. After lunch in a local restaurant we drop you at Wat Luang Tha Mahabua (Tiger Temple). The visit is on own risk and entrance fee not included. Tonight you attend Dinner at your Hotel.

Day 6 Saturday 25th April
Kanchanaburi - Hellfire Pass (B L D)
ANZAC Day
Early morning you depart the hotel for the dawn service at Hellfire Pass, which begins at 5.30am. After the Service you return to the Hellfire Pass museum for the “Gun Fire” breakfast (ANZAC biscuits, tea or coffee with Bundaberg rum) and then return to the hotel for breakfast. At approximately 11.00am you attend the commemoration service at the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, where over 6,500 former POW’s are buried. After lunch you visit the War Museum and take in the sights of Kanchanaburi, returning late afternoon to the hotel.

Day 7 Sunday 26th April
Elephant Camp - River Kwai Village Hotel (B L D)
This morning you visit an elephant Camp, where if you wish take an elephant ride, stopping on the way to see monkeys in the wild. Returning to the hotel for lunch and the afternoon is free to allow you to recharge the batteries; you can laze by the pool and enjoy the activities of the hotel.

Day 8 Monday 27th April
Kanchanaburi – Lawa Cave – River Kwai (B L D)
This morning you take a scenic ride up the Kwai Noi River in a long tailed boat to the Lawa Cave. You then travel to Hindat Hot Springs which was built by PoW’s for Japanese Officers. A picnic lunch is provided. You then visit the “Japanese Soldiers Stove” then visit the site of the “Malay Camp” where the Australians who worked at “Hellfire Pass” were camped. Mid afternoon you return to your hotel to put your feet up or relax by the pool and enjoy some of the activities of the hotel.

Day 9 Tuesday 28th April
River Kwai - Floating Market – Bangkok (B L)
After breakfast you travel to the traditional Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, which is the largest floating market in the vicinity. You travel around the market in a small boat seeing the many stall that are set up along the river. After lunch you visit the Rose Garden Elephant and culture show. You return to Bangkok late afternoon.

Day 10 Wednesday 29th April
Bangkok (B D)
Today is a free day; you can put your feet up, shop or continue your sightseeing. This evening there is a group farewell dinner.

This morning your tour ends.
